U.S. Announces Tariffs on EU Products Following WTO Arbitration

Categories: , ,

On October 2, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) released a list of European products subject to new tariffs from the U.S. These new tariffs will effect products originating from four individual countries — France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom — and are set to go into effect on or around October 18, 2019.

The new levies will effect aircraft parts, luxury apparel, cheese, food, and steel, among others. Large civil aircraft products will face a rate of 10%, while agricultural and other products will face an increase of 25%.

The announcement from USTR can be found here.

A full list of the products effected can be found here.

This announcement follows a ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that cleared the way for the U.S. to implement retaliatory tariffs. In the case, the U.S. accused the European Union of illegally subsidizing Airbus SE — Europe’s top airplane and aviation manufacturer — creating unfair trade practices and negatively influencing the U.S. aviation industry.

Trans-Border will continue to monitor the situation. If you have any questions, please reach out to Bill Carey, Import Compliance Manager, at bcarey@tbgfs.com or (800) 493-9444.
