Surtax Imposed by Canada on U.S. Steel and Aluminum Lifted

Categories: , ,

In May 2018, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian made steel and aluminum. In response, Canada imposed surtaxes on C$16.6 billion in imports of steel, aluminum, and other products that originate in the U.S., representing the value of 2017 Canadian exports affected by U.S. tariffs. These surtaxes have been in effect since July 1, 2018.

On May 19, 2019, Canada’s Department of Finance issued a repeal of these surtaxes following the United States announcement that it would lift its own tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. As of now, importers will no longer be required to pay surtax pursuant to either the United States Surtax Order (Steel and Aluminum), SOR/2018-152, or the United States Surtax Order (Other Goods), SOR/2018-153.

Trans-Border will continue to monitor the situation. If you have any questions, please reach out to Bill Carey, Import Compliance Manager, at bcarey@tbgfs.com or (800) 493-9444.
