Suez Canal blocked by Evergreen Container Ship, Halting Traffic

Shipping traffic through the Suez Canal has been shut down due to a container ship turned sideways. The Ever Given is an ultra large container ship with a carrying capacity of 20,000 TEU.

The ship was en route from Yantian, China, to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands when it reportedly ran aground Tuesday morning. It appears the Ever Given is stable and there have been no reports of damage to the container ship or its cargo. Because of the Ever Given’s position, both northbound and southbound traffic have been blocked by the ship.

Egyptian tug boats have thus far failed to pull the ship free. Container ships are reportedly stacking up at both ends of the canal, as well as in Great Bitter Lake in Egypt.

Trans-Border will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as it unfolds. If any of your shipments are impacted by the delay, you will be notified by your Trans-Border representative.
