Section 232 Duties to be Imposed on Certain Aluminum Products from Canada

Categories: , ,

According to a recent Presidential Proclamation, the U.S. will reinstate Section 232 duties on imports of non-alloyed unwrought aluminum from Canada. The 10 percent ad valorem tariff will be effective on August 16, 2020.

The Section 232 duties, which had been placed on Canadian aluminum imports early in the Trump administration, were removed following a deal between the U.S. and Canada in May 2019. The deal guaranteed that import volumes of non-alloyed unwrought aluminum would remain at historic levels. However, since that deal was struck, imports have far exceeded historic import levels.

It is also important to note that no drawback will be available on these duties.

Trans-Border will continue to monitor the situation. If you have any questions, please reach out to Bill Carey, Import Compliance Manager, at bcarey@tbgfs.com or (800) 493-9444.
