Port of Montreal begins partial strike

Longshore workers at the Port of Montreal have launched a partial strike this week, the next development in an on-going labor dispute at the port. The Canadian Union of Public Employees 375 (CUPE), which represents the longshore workers at the port, announced that, beginning Tuesday this week, they will not work overtime on weekdays or at all on the weekends.

This partial strike is in response to the Maritime Employers Association’s (MEA) announcement that they would suspend guaranteed minimum pay to employees, citing an 11% decrease in cargo volumes. This development follows a seven-month truce between the two sides where negotiations were intended to continue.

As with previous strikes at the Port of Montreal, we anticipate many shipments to begin rerouting to the Ports of Halifax and NY/NJ. If any of your shipments will be impacted, your Trans-Border representative will be in contact.

Trans-Border will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to at info@tbgfs.com or (800) 493-9444.
