Flooding in Midwest causes freight delays

Categories:

Nebraska and the greater Midwest have seen historic flooding this week, causing disruptions in the supply chain. The floods, which have affected several states across the Great Plains and Midwest, were caused by a snow storm quickly followed by unusually warm temperatures and rain fall.

Railways and highways were quickly underwater, diverting and delaying domestic and international freight. Nebraska is a hub for trucking and transportation, with the state boasting the highest concentration of truck drivers in the U.S. It is likely the impact of the floods could be seen nationwide, as many of those drivers will be returning to assess home damage or assist their communities, rather than heading immediately back on the road.

BSNF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad report flooding and track washouts in Nebraska and Iowa, citing “while BSNF operating teams are rerouting some trains, we have issued embargoes in response to outages [throughout the] impacted area.” Customers can expect delays of three to four days for some cargo coming through the Midwest.

We here at Trans-Border will do our best to ensure our customer’s merchandise avoids delay and will communicate changes immediately.
