In our on-going coverage of the coronavirus crisis and its impact on the logistics industry (see here and here), we have received additional information from a number of air and ocean carriers regarding services to and from mainland China.
Several airlines have closed cargo services to and from China for several months, with some not resuming service until at least March 27, 2020. In addition, major ocean carriers have begun cutting sailings destined to or originating from China, with all port activity in and around the Wuhan province at a standstill.
China remains on holiday throughout the first week of February in an effort to contain the further spread of the virus. Many major cities remain closed, including several port cities along the coast such as Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong and Hebei.
As the world’s second largest economy, and its biggest exporter, this stoppage in production throughout China will cause repercussions across the supply chain for months to come. As of this writing, there are 20,900 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the world claiming 429 lives.
