Air and Ocean Services Suspended due to Coronavirus
As earlier reported, the Chinese government extended the country’s Lunar New Year in an effort to contain the spreading coronavirus. Due to these and other quarantine activities, ocean carriers and airlines servicing China have begun suspending activities until February 10.
All of China remains on holiday until February 3, while the list of cities closed until February 10 has expanded to include Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Fuzhou and Xiamen. Many airlines are suspending passenger and cargo flights in and out of mainland China with the final flights scheduled to leave today, January 30. Several airlines are examining whether the Chinese mainland can continue to accommodate cargo aircraft from January 31 onward as part of a special flight schedule.
The coronavirus, a deadly respiratory infection, has infected nearly 8,000 people and taken the lives of 170 people around the world. Cases have been confirmed in fifteen countries across Asia, North America, and Australia, with five confirmed cases in the U.S.
