4 Ways Government Shutdown Impacting Importers/Exporters

 In Industry Insider, Industry News

As the United States prepares to enter the third week of the partial government shutdown, importers, exporters and trade agencies are beginning to feel the impact.  Many government agencies are operating at reduced capacity and may impact you as follows:

  1. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is not working and no new rates are being filed.  This could potentially impact you if an ocean carrier does not already have a rate published with the FMC on a particular trade lane.
  2. Customs Border and Protection (CBP) representatives are operating at reduced capacity for client setup and entry resolution.  Post summary corrections regarding Section 301 cannot be processed at this time.
  3. Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) Board is currently not working. This is impacting new FTZ approvals and general questions from being resolved.
  4. The United States Trade Representative (USTR) is not posting tariff lists, trade updates or any international compliance updates that have occurred after December 22, 2018.
