Canada to start electronic logging device (ELD) in 2019

Canada’s electronic logging device (ELD) mandate will require truckers to record their hours of service (HOS) electronically starting in late 2019.  This is expected to further tighten trucking capacity which is already hit by an aging workforce and few new drivers entering the industry.  Canada’s ELD is very similar to what the United States implemented last December which ultimately lead to tighter capacity and rate increases.

With restricted hours of service we are likely to see shippers look more at intermodal transportation and transloading merchandise.  Canadian Pacific said it expects trucking pressure to build through 2019 and into 2020.
